Kaiaua Onewa Māhina Chest plate
This unique half-moon Taonga is hand-carved from Kaiaua Onewa, a stone shaped by the volcanic history of Aotearoa and gathered from the shores of Kaiaua. Inspired by Te Marama and her ever-changing phases, this taonga reflects the cycles of growth, reflection, and renewal that guide us throughout life. The natural markings within the stone mirror the contrast of light and shadow across the night sky, giving each piece its own distinct character and story.
Hand-carved by 16-year-old Māori carver Hemi Smiler Smith, this taonga is created with patience, purpose, and respect for the whakapapa of the stone. Every stage of the carving process, from shaping to finishing, is carried out with intention, acknowledging the journey of the stone from te taiao into a taonga that can be worn and treasured.
The Māhina design symbolises transition, balance, and inner strength. Like the moon itself, it reminds us that change is a natural part of life and that growth comes through every phase of our journey.
The adjustable cord is hand-tied by Hemi, completing a taonga that carries both craftsmanship and meaning. No two pieces are ever the same, ensuring every carving remains unique to its wearer.
