Health and Safety and Compliance Plan
Whakapakari Ora Tāpui Ltd
Our Commitment to Wellbeing and Safety
At Whakapakari Ora, we are committed to delivering safe, culturally grounded rongoā Māori services that honour both tikanga Māori and Aotearoa's legal standards. This page outlines our health, safety, and compliance policies for all wānanga, workshops, mobile clinics, and community services.
1. Legal Compliance
We meet the requirements of the following legislation:
- Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 – All activities follow a risk-managed, safe practice approach.
- Privacy Act 2020 – Client data is securely stored and accessed only with consent.
- Health and Disability Services Consumer Rights (1996) – We uphold transparency, consent, and respect at all stages of service.
- Medicines Act / Therapeutics Products Bill – We do not make medical claims about rākau or remedies.
- Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 – Clear refund and complaints process in place.
- Children’s Act 2014 – All kaimahi are police vetted and trained in safeguarding.
- Food Safety Regulations – Internal rongoā follows Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) hygiene regulations.
2. Cultural and Spiritual Safety
We align our practices with tikanga Māori and maramataka to honour the mauri of people, places, and plants. This includes:
- Ethical harvesting of rongoā rākau
- Following maramataka phases (e.g., avoiding Whiro for events)
- Opening and closing each session with karakia
- Safe space creation through whakawhanaungatanga
We also follow the Tikanga ā-Rongoā (2014) guidelines from Manatū Hauora.
3. Risk Management
We actively manage physical, emotional, and spiritual risks.
Common risks we manage:
- Allergies or sensitivities to rongoā
- Emotional or spiritual overwhelm during mirimiri
- Physical injury or strain in clinics
- Data protection for client info
Our controls include:
- First Aid training for all practitioners
- Informed consent before and during services
- Risk register, incident forms, and follow-up support
- Secure PRM (Patient Record Management) system with two-step verification
4. Service Safety Standards
- Clear Scope of Practice: We provide complementary wellness services, not medical advice or treatment.
- Consent-Based Practice: Clients may stop or change sessions at any time.
- Product Safety: All balms and rongoā preparations are externally applied unless specifically advised otherwise.
- Transparent Pricing: Clients are informed of all costs prior to services.
5. Accountability
We acknowledge our responsibilities to:
- Mana Whenua – Rongoā practices are supported by local rūnaka and elders.
- Tūroro (Clients) – All care is personalised, respectful, and within practitioner scope.
- Te Taiao (Environment) – We harvest respectfully and return to the whenua where we take from.
- Ourselves and Our Iwi – We honour our whakapapa, mentors, and collective knowledge.
- The Rongoā Collective – We protect the integrity of rongoā and share responsibly.
6. Insurance and ACC
We hold:
- Public and Product Liability Insurance
- Professional Indemnity Insurance
- Material Damage cover for our mobile clinic
- Statutory Liability Insurance
We are working toward ACC Registration under the Social Rehabilitation Pathway for rongoā Māori.
