Collection: He Taonga, He Tama – Hemi’s Carvings

Guided by tikanga Māori and his deep connection to the whenua (land), Hemi breathes life into every piece he creates.

Carved and bound by 15-year-old Māori artist Hemi, the taonga carry the wairua (spirit) of both te taiao (the natural world) and those who have nurtured his creative path.

A student at Ao Tawhiti, Hemi is supported and inspired by his kaiako Whaea Marz, who plays a pivotal role in uplifting ākonga (students) through hands-on learning. Through her guidance, students like Hemi are introduced to places like the Christchurch Lapidary Club, where they can connect with stone, tools, and community — unlocking their potential through mahi toi (art making).

A dedicated student of both traditional wood and stone carving, Hemi is mentored by renowned artists Jon Jeet (Tūhono Taonga) and Damian Mackie (Whakaraupō Carving Centre). His mahi toi (artwork) draws from wairua (spiritual energy) and the stories held within the materials he uses — including Aroha stone, serpentine, and stone he has foraged himself.

Each taonga is uniquely crafted with care, intention, and aroha, embodying a journey of learning, cultural pride, and youthful excellence. Whether worn close to the body or gifted to someone special, Hemi’s creations are more than adornments — they are living expressions of whakapapa and purpose.
