Hand-carved by 16-year-old Māori carver Hemi Smiler Smith, this piece honours the traditional form of the toki (adze), a symbol of achievement, wisdom, authority, and the ability to shape one's own path.

Carved from Rhodonite sourced from Akatore Bay, this taonga showcases beautiful natural shades of pink, red, and black, with unique patterns and markings that give the stone its own character. Each piece of Akatore stone is naturally different, making every toki completely individual.

The clean, straight profile of the toki highlights the natural beauty of the stone while representing discipline, focus, strength, and purpose. The rich colours and distinctive patterns of the Rhodonite create a striking taonga that reflects both the character of the stone and the care put into its carving.

The binding, completed by Hemi himself, is hand-bound with waxed cord and finished with care. Every stage of the carving process, from selecting and shaping the stone through to the final polish and binding, is completed by hand with attention to detail.
