Traditionally, the leaves of the Horopito tree were utilised to address stomach pain and diarrhoea, likely attributed to their astringent (tissue-tightening) and antiseptic properties. For skin concerns, crushed leaves steeped in water or chewed were applied, harnessing the peppery elements of Horopito to stimulate circulation both topically and internally.

Topical applications extend to fungal infections such as Candida albicans and ringworm, as well as treating wounds, cuts, burns, and painful bruises. Fresh leaves were even chewed for toothache relief. Internally, Horopito found use in treating diarrhoea, stomach aches, and addressing poor circulation.

Polygodial, the primary biologically active compound in Horopito, contributes to its distinctive "hot taste," reminiscent of peppery spices in traditional Japanese cuisine. Notably, polygodial exhibits significant anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. New Zealand researchers demonstrated its ability to inhibit Candida albicans growth (the yeast causing thrush), and other studies have showcased its effectiveness against various yeast-like fungi.
