A Sacred Passage

🌿💫 Reflecting on the Sacred: Exploring the Spiritual Essence of Menstruation in Māori Tradition 💫🌿

As a mother raising a teenage tamahine (daughter), I find myself reflecting deeply on the wisdom passed down through generations, especially when it comes to the sacred journey of womanhood. Today, I'm drawn to share a beautiful aspect of Māori culture that has resonated with me profoundly: the spiritual significance of menstruation and its profound connection to wairua (spirit) and well-being.

In our Māori tradition, menstruation isn't just a bodily function – it's a sacred passage, a time of immense spiritual connection and empowerment. It's a time when our daughters, our nieces, our sisters, and ourselves tap into the very essence of our wairua, aligning with the rhythms of Papatūānuku (Mother Earth) and IO (the universe). It's an opportunity to honour the divine feminine within and embrace the transformative power of Te Whare Tangata (the womb).

During this time, our girls are in a state of tapu (sacredness), where their wairua shines brightest. It's a period for introspection, for honouring the divine feminine within each of us, and for connecting with our ancestors and the divine. It's a journey of transformation, of embracing the ebb and flow of life's cycles.

As mothers, it's our role to guide our tamahine through this journey, to share with them the ancient wisdom of our culture, and to nurture their understanding of the deep connection between wairua and menstrual health. By honouring their cycles, we teach them to honour themselves – fostering balance, resilience, and a profound sense of self-worth.

So let's walk alongside our daughters, sharing in the beauty and sacredness of menstruation. Let's instill in them a sense of empowerment, reverence, and connection to their wairua and the natural world around them.

Together, let's embrace this timeless wisdom, weaving it into the fabric of our lives and passing it on to the generations to come.
